A few days later the woman returned very happy, to thank God, the intercession of Saint Joseph had preserved her hand, which she so much needed to be able to work. Many devotees imitated this simple worker, writing letters to Saint Joseph.

This form of written requests proliferated quickly and without being finished the work was approached by many people on foot or in carriages, to commend themselves for all their problems to the Saint.
Thus began a fact that has a very important place in the history of the Sanctuary, since it has marked in a particular way the devotion that people profess to Sant Josep de la Muntanya.
It is difficult to imagine the importance that the devotion to writing letters to Saint Joseph achieved and the consequences that this fact produced. Analyzing the magazine that is published in the Sanctuary, “La Monta’a de San José”, since the year of its appearance, in 1903, we can glimpse all that. Each month the letters were cremated, all the dominations after the 19th. Saint Joseph also came out in procession.

Many were the comments that the devotion to Sant Josep de la Muntanya produced in Barcelona. In May 1903, 3,328 letters were burned, not only from the city of Barcelona, but this practice had spread throughout the world.
Every month the Catalan newspapers of the time: El Correo Catalnn, La Vanguardia, El Diario de Barcelona, La Dinastía, El Noticiero Universal… explained the events that took place in the Sanctuary on the occasion of the cremation of letters.

Mother Petra,
Mother Petra,
ni de les sospites que va començar a despertar.
Little did she imagineimagined by Mother Petra that the persecution in the Sanctuary came from the same Church.
In 1905 it is estimated that more than 30,000 people visited the Sanctuary on the feast of Saint Joseph.
At that time it came to the ears of Mare Petra that Mr. Cardenal Casa.as and Bishop Auxiliar, Mr. Ricardo Cortés, had something against the Sanctuary
The Mother, lover of the Church and truth, was devastated by them to know that she had to be true in these rumours.
Mother Petra, temple woman
There is a detail of this interview that shows the templence and nobility of Mare Petra, who came to state to the prelates that if she had genuinely caused the Church to be displeased with the Sanctuary, she would be the first to reject it. They did not tell him the reason for the complaint, but shortly afterwards, in the magazine of Montserrat, in July 1905, Mr Federico Clascar, signed an article against the work of the Sanctuary and the devotion of letters.

Only his great strength and his unmovable trust in God…
… made Mother Petra, who was already very ill at the time, fight to defend what she considered to be God’s work..
On August 10 of that same year, a statement from Cardinal Casaasas was received in the Sanctuary, announcing a canonical visit to the house. He also ordered all letters to be deposited in a closed box, forbidding them to be burned in public. It was also forbidden to account directly or indirectly in the magazine La Muntanya de San José of the number of letters received.
The test was hard, but it served to force the devotion to San José de la Muntanya to shine more strongly.
On October 6, 1905, Mother Petra was received in private audience by S. S. Pius X,
Finally, on 6 November and with the approval of Rome, the controversy raised against the Sanctuary was ended through an official statement by Cardinal Casaasas, in which it was confirmed that the devotion that the people professed in San José was authentic.
