Barcelona has existed as a bishopric since at least the 4th century, but as an archbishopric since 1964, thanks to Pope Paul VI, according to the bull “Læto animo”. It was an exempt archbishopric, without suffragan dioceses and directly subject to the Apostolic See. It maintained, however, a close union with the other Catalan bishoprics that formed the so-called Tarraconensis ecclesiastical province.
